What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a title given to a licensed professional who has completed extensive training in the specific areas of reproductive health and childbirth. This type of training includes a college degree and recurring examinations in addition to real-world experience in assisting with childbirth and providing primary health care for patients.

The ideals of a midwife are grounded in supporting each patient in an individualized experience that avoids or at least minimizes their need for unnecessary interventions. Such an intervention often includes cesarean, or C-section delivery because of the heightened risk this birthing method often poses to both mother and child.

What are the Different Midwife Types?

There are actually several different midwife types, including:

  • Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
  • Certified Midwife (CM)
  • Direct-Entry Midwife (DEM)
  • Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)
  • Lay Midwife

Many of these include a certification, though a direct-entry midwife and a lay midwife rely more on professional experience than classroom study. The vast majority of midwives, approximately 90% in total, are a certified nurse-midwife or a certified midwife. These particular classifications allow the midwife to not only assist during delivery, but also perform routine gynecological exams and offer primary care.

How Can a Midwife Help During My Pregnancy?

Midwives are excellent resources all throughout the gestation period. They are able to provide ongoing care, and will be easily able to consult with an obstetrician or other specialists should any complications arise.

One of the biggest components to being a midwife is to make sure that all patients are fully educated on their options for prenatal care, labor, and delivery. The literal translation of the word midwife means “with woman”, and so it is precisely their goal to be with you before, during, and even after your pregnancy.
